Buying a used transmission — is it as risky as it sounds?

A second-hand gearbox puts most buyers off — it seems like a gamble. In reality, the risk is predictable if you check a few things before buying.

What to check before buying

The donor’s mileage, service history and a test run on the test bench provide enough information to assess its condition. A contract-grade unit from a trusted source often costs a third of the price of a new one, yet lasts just as long — provided you take your time and choose a part that comes with a warranty.

The main rule

Don’t buy a car ‘based on a photo’. Insist on a vehicle inspection and the paperwork for the donor car.
